About Second Chances

Nineteen-year-old porn star Remy Dawes loves his job at Matchmakers, a gay nightclub, but the fantasy he portrays every night doesn't leave room for what he really wants: companionship, love, someone to come home to, someone just for him. Who would ever take seriously a kid who practically sells his body for others' pleasure? Thirty-five-year-old Chance Whitaker has sworn off dating younger men after having been cheated on one too many times, until the owner of Matchmakers convinces him to take a chance on Remy Dawes, a gorgeous kid who surprises Chance at every turn. As things fall apart through meddling, death, and betrayal, will there be a second chance for two people to find love?

Note: This story takes place in a fictional world, the same as the Shifting Isles series. There are multiple gods, different names for the days of the week, etc. A glossary is included with the story for those interested in the little world building details.

REVIEW:

What to say about Second Chances by G.R. Lyons? Interesting, confusing, atrocious communication skills, adorable, drama - let me repeat that one DRAMA! Set in an alternate universe/world lacking law and order Second Chances sets the stage for a unique and interesting trilogy.

First let's clear up the only real issue I had, the days of the week. As an example: Twinsday and Siresday. I still don’t know what day was what as I was reading. Let’s say they are just plain confusing and had me rereading multiple times. I think it might have helped if the glossary preceded the story to assist here. If you pick this book up, please, go to the glossary first.

Okay with that off my chest, let’s meet the guys.

  • Remy Dwes is a 19 year old stripper who works at the nightclub, Matchmaker. Remy is looking for that special someone and is is extremely mature for his age. He has been though a lot and survived at such a young age. He has made a life for himself albeit a non-traditional lonely one.

  • 35 year old Chance Whitaker is a successful editor who has sworn off “cheating younger men”. He has a dismal track record with men but yearns for “the one” to share quiet nights and a future with.

  • Dan Berringer is the 25 year old owner of Matchmakers, a friend of Remy’s, and matchmaker extraordinaire. Dan is my favorite character by far. He is that friend you can count on, has your back, and is kind and generous. We are left wondering about him and what went down with his ex, Bryan.

  • Matty, Remy’s horrid “best” friend. Matty is somewhat promiscuous. Oh who am I kidding, he is a whore that does not deserve Remy’s friendship. After what he does, let’s say that Remy is a better man than I by forgiving him and remaining friends.

Chance and Remey… Oh man, the title is way off base, there are so many chances here your head spins. However, you can’t help rooting for them and wishing they would get there act together.

The miscommunication and rampant assumptions take the angst to a new level. Oh and Chance - why is Remy apologizing to you for something horrific that happened to him?.

Second Chances is one of those books that elicits many emotions as you turn the page.

I am left with torn feelings about it. At the end of the day the connection between Chance and Remy, while far from healthy most of the time, works for them. These two have truly found their soulmates. Now they just need to get their heads out of their collective arse’s.
