“Bro, what the hell are ya up to?”
Ryland seemed to notice and looked up at Ryder with narrowed eyes.
“I’m doing what I can to help without really helping, my brother. Stay here and keep Waylon company.”
“Grr!” Ryder plopped onto the seat and folded his arms.
“You okay, man? Looks like you’re a little pissed ‘bout something.”
“Uh, nothing.” Ryder waved goodbye to Ryland and Dale, sighing. “Damn! Don’t those two just make you sick sometimes?”
“Huh?”
“I mean, I love my bro, but Dale can’t keep his paws off him for any length of time. I wish he’d lay off a little.”
“So you can put your claws in him instead?”
Ryder drew up his lips and dropped his head in shame. “All right, fine. I’ll admit it. I’m still jealous as fuck that Dale is so in love with my brother and vice versa. Hell, I’m entitled. I been around a lot longer than Dale.”
“So what, Ryder. Just because you and Ry are brothers like that doesn’t mean he ain’t allowed to fall in love. I mean, I get it. I’m envious my bro lucked up on this great set up too, but I’m happy he’s settled. Ryland is good for him, real good. I’ve never seen my brother so happy until now.”
Ryder forced his hands in his pocket, feeling the envy in his heart grow. He knew he’d told Ryland he’d finally give in to keep the peace, but a part of him still didn’t want to comply. “Right, uh, yeah, same here. Ry has been a lot happier with the relationship too. I mean, Jeb says his love stories are more popular than any of the vampire fiction he’s written for the past ten or so years. His fans seem to enjoy him being in love.”
“And you should too.”
“Way, it ain’t that simple, and you know it. Ryland and I are lovers and brothers.”
“Yeah, yeah, I know, but that don’t mean you can’t be happy for him and Dale. Does everything have to be all about you, Ryder? Why don’t you care about someone else’s happiness for once?”
“I do care, I just−”
“Want him all for yourself, and that won’t work. Damnit, don’t you get it, Ryder? You’re lucky to have your brother and mine in your corner. And I ain’t talking ‘bout sex, man. I’m saying a connection, an emotional bond, dude. I’d almost kill to have that with somebody.”
Ryder sighed inwardly and turned on his heel, knowing he was in the wrong for being jealous. “Way, I get it, I really do, but that bond with my brother has been tainted. Nothing against Dale, but this was supposed to happen to us years ago. We both danced around it, avoided it like the fucking plague, and just when I have him where I’ve always wanted him, poof. Here comes your brother, and everything’s changed.”
“In a good way.”
“Yeah, but mostly for Ryland. I know I sound selfish. I’d always wanted my brother to be a part of my relationship with Gren, but he didn’t come around until right before he was killed. Now we’re dealing with this again and …” Ryder shrugged, “It’s someone else standing in the way of our happiness.”
“Ryder, I dunno what else you want. You can have happiness with ‘em both. Quit your fucking whining, and deal with it!” Waylon stopped abruptly and picked up his cell. “Mooney. Yeah, Moto. Yeah? Aw, shit, I’m on my way. Hey, man, I gotta go. Some shit’s going down at the station with the reports on the body they found last week. Tell my brother and yours I had to leave.”
“Yeah, okay, just don’t be late for your date, man.”
“I’ll try not to, but I’m sure Naomi will understand if we find the break we’re looking for to solve the murders.” Waylon slammed the door behind him.
Ryder shook his head and held himself. “Yeah, I got a chance to be with both of ‘em, but I only love Ryland. I can’t really fall fully in love with Dale knowing he severed the relationship between me and my brother.”
