It’s Jaye Larson’s nineteenth birthday, and all he wants is to spend time with his boyfriend, Kris, and his mother — the people he loves most, who make life worth living. But faced with his mother’s demons, the imperfections of his relationship with Kris, and dangerous, homophobic strangers, one by one, all of Jaye’s dreams are soon derailed. Plunging into a waking nightmare, shortly after going to bed alone, Jaye wakes in an alley, pinned down by two men with slow, bloody rape and murder in mind. It’s just the start of Jaye’s fight for his life, and his sanity, as time and time again, he’s forced to make impossible choices to survive, no matter what it costs. (M/M)

Someone murmured under their breath, “Faggot whore.” The sound traveled farther than it might have otherwise in the echo-chamber bathroom.

“Hey! You don’t fucking call him that,” Cash snapped. “You don’t fucking call him anything.”

Staying turned away from the crowd, Jaye rubbed at his face, washing it off. He sniffled a little to clear his nose and kept his back to the others until he was able to pull himself together. He used the shower spray to try to quickly clean up, feeling watched.

“Johnny. C’mere,” Cash beckoned.

He didn’t want to go, but he wasn’t exactly in a position to argue.

Jaye took a deep breath, wiped a hand over his face one last time, and turned. Cash was a few steps away, opposite a guy who’d kind of been at the fringes of things at lunch or when the guys were all together. Jaye didn’t even know his name, but the twenty-something guy had brown hair, pasty skin, a big nose and freckles.

“It’s your lucky day, kid,” Cash told Jaye without breaking eye contact with the guy Jaye didn’t know. “You get a free shot at Rat as payback for him running his fucking mouth.”

Jaye immediately glanced toward Dorrance, but Dorrance didn’t seem to be paying them any attention.

Maybe Jaye would get in trouble if he took the shot.

Honestly, he didn’t really care. Plenty of people had called him names in his life, especially with the sort of face, hair, sexual orientation, and poverty-stricken life he’d had. But that was the first time he’d been called a name in prison while getting fucked in front of a room full of people.

And it pissed him off.

Feigning like he was shy, or unsure, Jaye kept his head bowed. He dragged his right thumb over his chin, then swung hard, with all of his rage, before Rat could anticipate the blow.

It connected solidly with Rat’s big nose. Jaye felt the snap a half second before Rat yelled in pain.

Rat started to reach up to block his probably broken nose, but Jaye’s left was already coming around and caught him in the jaw. The bone slid sideways almost comically, the blood streaming down over Rat’s lips and chin from his nostrils. Rat forgot for a moment to block the punches, he was so stunned.

Jaye drove his right fist up through the middle and caught Rat in his meaty gut, driving the air from his lungs.

Someone pulled Jaye back. It was Jinx, one of the younger members of the Disciples, maybe a year or two older than Jaye, and who Cash referred to as Puppy due to his newbie status in the gang. Jinx was cracking up, but not as much as Cash, who was practically doubled over with amusement.

The laughter caught on, spreading fast, until Jaye and Rat were the only ones not joining in. Instead, they just stared each other down.

“Call me a faggot whore one more time,” Jaye quietly, politely, asked Rat.

“I really think he wants you to,” Jinx snickered.

“I do,” Jaye admitted. “I’ll bite that fucking bloody nose you’ve got right off. Know why? ‘Cause I don’t fuckin’ care.” Jaye spread his arms wide in invitation. The laughter was dying off.

Still collecting himself and grinning, Cash stepped closer to Jaye and said with a nod in his direction. “You know he killed someone? That wasn’t even what got him landed in here. And he’s a fuckin’ teenager. So, what do you say, Rat?”

“S-sorry, Johnny,” Rat muttered thickly, trying to catch the blood which was now running in watery streaks down the front of his pale, naked body to tint the water swirling down the nearby drain.

“He’s got bigger balls than you,” Cash told Rat with an arched brow. “Trust me, I checked.”

Jinx lost it, cracking up and clapping Jaye on the back. Then he touched fists with Cash. From the doorway, Dorrance finally decided to speak up.

“All right, ladies. Break it up. Kauffman, you need to visit Health Services?”

Rat nodded and went to get a towel.

Dixon Rowe is a good man and a good cop who keeps finding himself in bed with the enemy. After he picks up a young ex-con named Jaye Larson for stealing food, Dixon is seduced by the possibility of helping someone truly in need. He tells himself he’s assisting young Jaye out of the goodness of his heart—not because of how sexy Jaye is under all of the tattoos and defiance. But temptation entangles them as the malicious ghosts of Jaye's past return to haunt their every step. Jaye’s ghosts are bad enough, but the demon from Dixon's past is real enough to put both of their lives in danger. (M/M)
