Kimmers' Taboo Tuesday Read: April 26, 2016

This Taboo Tuesday Read brings you what was my first foray into taboo. Joseph Lance Tonlet’s Brothers LaFon Part One: Crucial Lessons.

I have actually read this book twice now!

When I went to bring you this feature, even though I originally rated the read a five back in early 2015, I realized I was probably still a little shocked as to what I had actually read when I wrote my review. I don’t mean shocked in the sense that it was incest…..I knew what I was getting myself into. I mean shocked that it impacted me on such a profound level.

So, I read it again and found that it still touched me in much the same way. The only difference this time was that I could put a label on it……empathy!

JLT had taken, what for me was a first attempt at some very challenging material (incest, physical abuse, dubious consent) and created characters so compelling that I empathized with their circumstances.

And after all isn’t that why we read fiction? To take us into someone else’s world. To give us experiences we might not otherwise have. And in some instances to have an understanding for even those actions we might not even approve of.

BLURB:

Alexander LaFon lives a nightmare, but he deals with it. Deals with the fact that his mother abandoned him as an infant, deals with the fact that his father is never home, and deals with the fact that his older brother, Jeremiah, tortures him. He dreams of escaping his mobile-home prison and finding a normal life. Of breaking free of his agony, finding a woman to love, becoming a teacher. But some horrors you can never outrun. There's nowhere to hide. Some nightmares chase you in your sleep and steal your freedom like a brutal thief. Some brothers never give up and never answer why.
