TERRY STOOD IN the queue of the Helping Hands Drop-in Center, waiting for his breakfast. His mind was on the resume he’d prepared the night before for the employment agency he’d joined two weeks ago. He was grateful the doctor for the homeless community and the Helping Hands Center had referred him to the charity organization, which helped homeless people get off the streets. The organization had helped him find a place to live, and once he’d settled into his room, they had referred him to an employment agency.

Terry had been amazed at how everything had fallen into place; however, he also felt nervous that once he’d re-established himself in the community, he’d somehow fail and find himself back on the streets again. That thought gave him the shivers as he stood waiting for his breakfast. He was so lost in his thoughts that he nearly jumped out of his skin in fright when he heard John’s loud voice calling out to him, “Morning, Terry. You still have that room, mate?”

Totally forgetting his worries and his past, Terry spun around and saw John grinning at him, his small frame almost lost in the queue. John’s curly gray hair surrounded his slim, wrinkly face, enhancing the wise appearance of the elderly Aboriginal man. He loved listening to John’s tales from his younger days, about his culture and tradition, whenever he was lucky enough to catch him talking about his life. The rumor was that John had turned up in Perth after a long walkabout in the Noongar region, which was the entire Southwestern portion of Western Australia. One day, he had come to Perth and decided that it was a good place to stay for a while. What he liked the most about John was the way he made those around him feel like they mattered. The old man always listened first, then responded. Terry thought it was hard not to smile back at the old man, no matter how stressed you felt.

“Morning, John! Yes, I still have it, and I got a case manager at an employment center to help me find a job now too!” Terry spoke a little louder so John could hear him.

When John heard him, he saluted Terry with the ubiquitous ‘thumbs-up’ and shouted loudly enough to show his hearing really was failing, “Good on ya, mate!”

Ever since Terry had lost his partner, Paul, about two years ago, he’d fallen into the dark depths of depression, the same depression for which he was now under medical supervision. At first he hadn’t been able to shake the disbelief that Paul had been taken away from him by a damned drunk driver, then he began to feel an intense loss and grief. In those early days, he had dreaded coming home because Paul wasn’t there to coax him to try one of his healthy concoctions. Terry had never thought he would miss marinated tofu on the barbecue, or tasteless eggplant that resembled an old man’s shriveled dick. Paul had loved growing those tiny, malnourished looking eggplants. The bastards never grew well in the pot, but his man was adamant, so they kept trying. Paul just wouldn’t give up on his dream of having a veggie patch in flower pots.

At nighttime, Terry had slept on his side of the bed, holding the singlet Paul had worn the night before the accident, smelling it tenderly; but after a while, the scent disappeared…then his grief had turned to anger. After that, Terry was lost in his resentment, especially when the drunk driver got a pathetic sentence that seemed to make a mockery of Paul’s life. Terry hadn’t been able to function as he used to, so after a while he lost his job, and shortly after that, his home too.

For the past year, since Terry had been homeless, he refused to contact his parents who had disowned him because he’d fallen in love with Paul, and not a woman. His parents were devoted Christians and hadn’t been able to come to terms with the fact that Terry was gay. Up until he met Paul, his parents always hoped he’d meet a nice girl and share a life like theirs. Despite the hunger, the cold, and the occasional beating from drunks on a weekend night, Terry remembered firmly declining the homeless support team’s offer to get in touch with his parents on his behalf. He was too embarrassed to tell them that he did call his parents a while back for help…he refused to think about that call until this day.

As he reflected back, Terry realized he had been caught unaware that his ongoing grief was eventually turning into depression. He had slowly begun to understand the insidious nature of depression, how it often snuck up on a person following a painful experience, like the way he’d lost Paul. Like many people, Terry had needed someone who knew him to notice how unmotivated he’d become, walking around as if he were a ghost…it was all because he was ill at the time. Terry remembered how he’d tried to shake off his misery for months, how he’d felt so empty for so long - until one day when Dr. Sharma’s nurse had spoken to him when he came to the food van.

Lily especially thanks her husband with all her heart for his endless patience, love and support. He is the love of her life and apple of her eye….he is the home she goes to at the end of a hard day at work.
