Holy smokes! Jack L. Pyke’s Lost in the Echo is unlike anything I have read in quite some time. And although the plot, once revealed, is not unusual or unheard of it's Pyke’s brilliant story telling which makes it superb.
Even the music she chooses at the start of the story, Disturbs remake of The Sound of Silence, is a perfect hint as to where the main character, Will, is about to travel.
"Fools," said I, "you do not know Silence, like a cancer, grows. Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you." But my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence
And no one dare disturb the sound of silence…..til now!
In true Pyke fashion the story starts off with Will and Ryan and snippets of conversation where you can tell they each share a secret. A very big secret.
The dialog can make you feel a little lost at first but don’t get discouraged because you are going to ultimately love this ride!
Through their discussions and dropped innuendos, as well as references to other individuals, you come to realize this secret is very emotional, immense – even raw! It’s so big that you can actually feel it. And whatever it is, Will is running from it.
Having gone on holiday Will is kidnapped during a morning run and these captures know him well. Down to his sexual preferences and even what he likes to eat. They give him three days in which they will ask three questions they expect three answers to. Right here is where Jack L. Pyke’s magic shines.
With beautifully crafted analogies she places you, the reader, right there as the captive. Sensing, smelling, hearing, and feeling it all!
With these three questions and Will’s flashbacks the secret is slowly, painfully, achingly revealed and the free fall from the memories Will has been struggling with, as well as the connection, is utterly heartbreaking.
Even the one sex seen is conveyed in such a way you can feel the depth of Will’s loss, his helplessness while at the same time his need: To have that one person, that one man, fix it all, ground him, and take the pain away.
Lost in the Echo is a shining example of how powerful a punch an artist can pack into so few pages.
Jack L. Pyke gives you well rounded characters, a carefully crafted backstory and an engaging plot that has you guessing up to that pivotal moment, and then spinning at its revelation, while hoping right up to the end. It is one of those stories which will leave you wanting to immediately read it again once you know the answers and all the characters, just so you can immerse yourself in their mindset. Knowing the emotional toll writing like this can take on an author I commend Jack L. Pyke. Thank you for sharing this impassioned story. More importantly thank you for speaking for Ryan, that can not have been an easy task to do!
