GUEST POST: S.J.D. Peterson Author of 'Override'

A big shout out to Kimmers for letting me overtake her blog this afternoon. I hope you all don't mind.

Recently, someone asked me if I thought about writing romance to which my reply was, “All but a couple of my books are romances.” They laughed and said, “No, Jo, you write erotica.”

I stood there for a moment blinking with what I’m sure was a dumb look on my face. When my brain finally started working again, I had to ask myself, did I even know what the difference between, romance, erotic romance, and erotica were? I think I could explain the difference between romance and erotic romance. In my opinion, they are both love stories, but with the erotic tag, the sexual encounters are much more graphic.

But what about the difference between erotic romance and erotica?

I didn’t have a clue so figured I’d do a little research. I pulled up a couple books with Erotic Romance tags and a couple with the Erotica tag. You know what I discovered? That I was still confused. The blurbs were no help; neither was reading the first chapter. What I did discover was that all three types talked about love and lust, HEA or HFN endings, and appeared to have plots. Some of the books were tagged under both erotic romance and erotica, some under all three and those blurred lines got even hazier.

Now, I’ve read some books that I’d consider porn without plot. Surely those would be tagged as erotica. Off I went in search of them and guess what? They were tagged as erotic romance! *throws hands up*

So help a girl out. What do you think are the differences? Do you think there should be a better tagging system?

While you're considering this check out my newest book, Override, the first in my The Underground Club series.

At over six feet, with a body honed in the gym, auto worker Donavan Gregory is used to people assuming he’s a dominant top. Unfortunately, they’re wrong, and Donavan’s desire to explore his submissive side goes unfulfilled.

Smaller and older than Donavan, Dr. Seth Manning might not look like a typical Dominant, but when the two men meet at Pride, Donavan realizes Seth might be his perfect counterpart. The trouble is, Donavan doesn’t have as much experience with the BDSM world as he’d like. What could an educated, handsome, and confident man like Seth possibly see in someone like him? Seth must convince him that despite the differences on the surface, when it comes to kinky fun and discovery, they’ll fit together just fine.

SJD Peterson, better known as Jo, hails from Michigan. Not the best place to live for someone who hates the cold and snow. When not reading or writing, Jo can be found close to the heater checking out NHL stats and watching the Red Wings kick a little butt. Can't cook, misses the clothes hamper nine out of ten tries, but is handy with power tools.
