About Winter Burning
The turmoil and social unrest of the late 1970's and early 1980s hits hard as a young man begins his journey of discovery. Not only is James SnowBringer a member of a race that has been oppressed and victims of systematic genocide, his sexual identity is equally hated.
When he meets a native dancer at a powwow, he is drawn to him immediately, but didn't know then that Wyman Crow would become his teacher, his guide and his lover through the hardest lessons of his life.
Traveling the country where his race once lived free, he finds that his people are not downtrodden and afraid, but as strong as ever, and willing to stand up for what they believe. Their strength becomes his and with Wyman by his side, there is nothing that can defeat him.
Here is a story that transcends time and distance. The lessons James learns and lives are as relevant today as when bell bottoms and disco were the norm and computers in everyone's homes seemed a futuristic dream.
When I started to learn about the real history of Native Americans and the genocide delivered to them, I knew one day I would write this book. I have some blood on my grandmother's side, but haven't been able to track down specifics, so I had to abandon that search. It didn't matter though, a need to write this has been in me for a long time, and after seeing the blatant racism and oppression in Standing Rock, it prompted me. It was time for my words to educate as well as entertain.
Having always advocated for the rights of the LGBTQ community, I thought, why not add that to the mix? So it was born, a book about two Native American gay men. I decided to make it in the seventies, when so much turmoil and bigotry against both groups was prevalent. History repeats, and as it comes back around, I was seeing similar problems today, forty years later.
A lot of today's people don't know that the struggles of the Native Americans didn't end when the whites conquered the west and drove them onto reservations. This is a little tiny bit of that, fictional, yes, but with historical facts as well, to let people know that there are people in this country who are still fighting for what we all take for granted.
James SnowBringer is from the Gros Ventre reservation in Montana, and has been sheltered by his overly protective parents. When James starts his journey away from the safety of his home, he meets a man at a powwow, a berdache, or two spirit. He is instantly intrigued by this man, but when Wyman Crow begins to tell him about the plight of their people, James sets out to learn for himself.
Along the way they meet a lot of people, others like them, whites who are for and against them, and also delve into their other community, the homosexuals, who are pushing to come out of the closet and live in the light.
Nothing comes easy for James in this journey. He learns things that threaten to tear him apart, but with Wyman by his side, he stands strong and understands what it means to him to be a proud gay Native man.
