About Divided Nation, United Hearts

February 1862. The War Between the States has been raging for nearly a year with no end in sight. Philadelphia socialite Wilhelmina Fredericks is safe from the war’s clutches, yet she feels compelled to do her part to bring the madness to an end. Accordingly, she disguises herself as a man, takes up arms, and heads South to join the fight. What could possibly go wrong?

Clara Summers’s father and older brother are serving in the Confederate army. Forced to look after her two younger brothers as well as the small Tennessee farm the family depends on for its livelihood, Clara has no time for or interest in love. Then she meets a handsome Union soldier named Wil Fredericks, and her loyalty to both her family and the Southern cause is put to the test.

4 HEART READ

REVIEW: Divided Nation, United Hearts by Yolanda Wallace is a beautifully poignant tale set in the American Civil War.

This love story follows Wil and her journey into the war between the states. Wil hides out as a man and enlists in the Union Army after hearing a stirring speech by Frederick Douglass, leaving behind her unrequited love interest who promises she’ll write as Wil goes off to war.

Wil discovers that being a man at war is much tougher than she anticipated and soon earns the respect of some of her fellow soldiers, while gaining the ire of others.

All this leads Wil to a small farmhouse far from home where she encounters Clara – a young Southern woman trying to do the best she can on the family farm in a time of strife.

When Wil’s world seems like it’s hurtling toward disaster, Clara provides a welcome light in her darkness – but can a Union soldier and a Southern woman have any hope of finding peace in troubled times?

Especially when Wil’s gender is a closely guarded secret that could cause her to lose everything if it were discovered.

This is my first venture into the historical genre and I was not disappointed.

Wallace’s telling of Divided Nation, United Hearts is moving and descriptive with an authentic feeling to the historical setting.

A gripping story with good characters following a believable journey. I give this book 4 hearts!
