I was drawn to the improbable premise for Katerina Ross’ Tenderly Wicked. Given what Americans hear about gay oppression in Russia, this book claimed to take it a step further, examining the subculture of the gay Russian BDSM scene.

Then I noted that Ms. Ross lives in Russia. Having grown up overseas, I knew hype and reality often don’t align.

When presented with the opportunity to read this vintage release, I never expected an absolutely delicious description of Russia, it’s gritty and sometimes brutal culture. At Tenderly Wicked’s core is a considerate relationship between two men, one in which sado-masochism actually moderates the effects of society’s cruelty.

One of my highest compliments is that a book makes me think. While thoroughly enjoying the love angle, Tenderly Wicked educated me as well. Ms. Ross gives readers a novel perspective on how kink preferences and personality can intersect.
