About Mate of Mine

Having escaped an abusive relationship, Jeremy Sutton has learned the hard way that you can only rely on yourself. Just as he was getting his life back on track, it’s thrown into chaos: first by a flood and then by the person who rescues him.

For Vampire, Donnie Smith, this was supposed to be another rescue mission until his eyes meet Jeremy’s. He’d finally found his mate but convincing Jeremy to trust him was harder than he thought. After everything Jeremy has suffered, he wasn’t willing to be hurt again.

Time and patience allows their relationship to deepen and finally move forward, but someone from Jeremy’s past threatens to destroy everything. Can Donnie save the man he loves or will he lose him forever?

4 HEART READ

REVIEW:

In Megs Pritchard’s world of vampires they are just like us… only with an extra “bite”. With beating hearts, they live among humans feeling fatigue, having the need to eat, sleep… and be loved. Or as is the case in Jeremy and Donnie’s story, Mate of Mine, Pritchard’s first book in her new Rescue Inc. series - be mated.

As a reader we’re immediately thrust into Jeremy’s peril as he’s drowning in flood waters. While he is on his last breath, wondering if rescue will ever come, we meet the team of Rescue Inc. and learn that it’s made up of humans… and vampires. Donnie is one of those vampires and when he rescues Jeremy in the nick of time he realizes, with sudden shock, he’s met his mate. His male – human - mate!

But, just because they’re mated doesn’t make a courtship any easier. When Jeremy is faced with the reality that he’s bound to a vampire, and rejects Donnie, you can feel his deep sorrow as he walks away saying, “’If you change your mind, my number’s on here.” Donnie’s left to surmise that no human would want a vampire. Yet, he doesn’t realize Jeremy’s rejection isn’t really because of what he is. Jeremy’s fear is so much deeper.

Donnie is one of those vampires and when he rescues Jeremy in the nick of time he realizes, with sudden shock, he’s met his mate. His male – human - mate!

Pritchard splashes these men’s emotions all over the pages. By using the term mate throughout, and reminding readers vampires only get one, you understand Donnie’s need to do whatever it takes to have Jeremy. In the same breath, she touches on Jeremy’s turmoil due to his past, and conveys the draw to his “destined” is too overwhelming to ignore, even if in his mind he doesn’t quite yet understand it, “…could he condemn the vampire knowing he would only have one mate?” Regardless of what happened in Jeremy’s past, neither are capable of ignoring the pull of their mating, and Pritchard doesn’t ignore that past either. In fact she brings it to a head in a powerfully suspenseful conclusion which ultimately shows just how far these two men’s bond reaches. What made Mate of Mine so refreshing for me, given Jeremy’s history, is that even through Donnie’s depth of yearning and need, he has unconditional respect for Jeremy. Stressing that they take it at Jeremy’s pace, that he is the one in control. A mated vampire driven by lust, yet with the utmost compassion and control over his own desire. And when that desire culminates the passion is something to sink your teeth in! For this reader I don’t feel Megs Pritchard skirts the subject of domestic abuse. She addresses it within the confines of how it plays out in the context of a fictional paranormal mating romance. What happens in Mate of Mine, works.

A mated vampire driven by lust, yet with the utmost compassion and control over his own desire.

In many ways Pritchard leaves her fictional world of Rescue Inc. open to us in Mate of Mine. Making room for us to learn in future editions if vampires don’t have to be mated to be with someone? Or if Donnie and Jeremy might find another couple like them so they can understand and grow their abilities? Can these vampires turn humans or how did they come to be? And of course, she stealthily sets the stage for the next bond in this new series. Which Rescue Inc. team member will it be? I can’t wait to find out! I feel a BDSM story warming my blood.
