About Shaded Chains

“Say my fucking name.”

Alex Gardner is a psychiatric nurse, Ross McKendrik a tattoo artist: both know the fears and strains of caring for an old man with dementia: Ross’s father. When lines between father and son are crossed and trust is broken between Alex and Ross—between a sub and Dom—Ross is in a fight for his life to earn the right to hear his sub say his name again. Only having grown up in the Scottish Highlands, Ross’s methods are a little... dangerous, his methods a little... dark. Love is about to get very, very tough.

Scotland Horror

It isn’t that hard to find a special post to help kickstart the second day of the Shaded Chains Blog Tour, especially with how I know how much Kimmers of Kimmers' Erotic Book Banter loves music. Combining that with the Horrors I found in Scotland, it’s one hell of a potent draw.

For those new to this, Shaded Chains is set in Gretna Green, a beautiful village in the South of Scotland. Now, Gretna has already gone down in history for its rebellious side, where due to 18th century laws and couples not being able to marry until they were 21 without their parents’ consent, Scotland’s more relaxed laws saw young couples run across its border to marry. The first place they’d come to is Gretna, and then the Blacksmiths shop. So it’s no surprise how both went down in history for being Scotland’s most infamous wedding venues.

I didn’t run away to get married in Gretna, neither did Alex and Ross in Shaded Chains, but I did spend a good portion of my school holiday living there with my sister and her Scottish husband. I love language in general, maybe not so much back then as a teen, but there’s something very special about the Scot’s accent. As you try to follow the hard and fasts shifts in tone and tonicity, it can tie you up with the rougher musical connotation, but it’s the one accent that always has, and will, make me wish I were born there.

So with all that love I have for Scotland, how does the Horror come in, and why does it make me love Scotland?

I think, if ever asked to pin down a taste of Scotland, especially in relation to Shaded Chains, it’s got to come from Biffy Clyro, a Scottish rock group from Kilmarnock, in East Ayrshire. I heard their "Many of Horror" single play a few years ago, and is still brings up those haunting contrasts of isolated landscape, eased by a soft Scottish lilt once the doors are closed, where that fire burns in the hearth to warm away the bitter chill.

So, no real horror to focus on here, just damn good music. (I can do light and fluffy sometimes, lol!). And, okay, there’s no kilts in the "Many of Horror" video, but along with cracking lyrics, the lead singer wears a suit and, wow, well just…suits! The Scot’s wear those just as damn sexy too!

Huge thanks to Kim and her team for hosting part of my seven-day tour with Shaded Chains. Yesterday I was at ForbiddenFiction, looking at why I might not be able to write light romance, and tomorrow I’m with Sinfullly Gay Romance Book Reviews looking at the question: Would you accept writing a story with an idea given to you by a reader? So please check me out at those too!

And while you're here don't miss Kimmers and Trio's Banter Buddies Feature of Shaded Chains where they tell you who their favorite characters are, some of their favorite moments, quotes, and more (don't worry, they don't give anything away.). Plus they share the prompt and photo that encouraged the story and give your their pre-release reviews!

Meet the Author

Jack L. Pyke blames her dark writing influences on living close to one of England’s finest forests. Having grown up hearing a history of kidnappings, murders, strange sightings, and sexual exploits her neck of the woods is renowned for, Jack takes that into her writing, having also learned that human coping strategies for intense situations can sometimes make the best of people have disastrously bad moments. Redeeming those flaws is Jack’s drive, and if that drive just happens to lead to sexual tension between two or more guys, Jack’s the first to let nature take its course.
